When you're travelling on a budget, hostels are the only place to stay (unless you have a relative or friend living there!).  They are also terrific if you are travelling by yourself and looking to make friends along the way.  Due to the money you can save and how much fun you can have at hostels, they are a great option when choosing where you will sleep that night.

Eventually you may be tired of hostels and would like some privacy.  The ability to just unpack all your stuff and not worry about it being stolen will be a great relief.  There are also many cheap pensions or hotels available for those nights where you are willing to spend a bit more money. 

If you still have that extra bit of cash which you are willing to spend, you can always check out the many last minute travel sites where hotels are selling rooms cheaply because you may only book up to 28 days in advance.
