tipping guidelines

How much do you tip? You don't want to offend someone - especially if they have been nice and provided great service. But you don't want to be over tipping because you're on a tight budget.

Every destination is different so you should read your guidebook about tipping guidelines before you arrive. When you arrive, you can ask the staff at the hostel and they should be able to tell you what is acceptable. And make sure you have a good sense of the value of the currency you are using. You may wonder why you are receiving absolutely awesome service…

Tipping in America

Tipping is part of the American culture due to the low wages paid in service industries. But if service is terrible, they deserve a complaint to the manager rather than a tip.

Even though some of these may not apply for a backpacker or budget traveller, here is a some rough tipping guidelines:

  • drink at a bar - $1 a drink
  • waiters and bartenders - 15 to 20%
  • taxi drivers - 10 to 15%
  • porters - $1 or $2 a bag
  • concierge - simple things like directions, nothing. But if it is something like hard to get concert tickets, $5-$20.
  • housekeeping - $1 or $2 per guest a day

Tipping in Canada

Tipping is similar to the US but generally not as much.

Tipping in UK, continental Europe, Australia and New Zealand

Tipping in these countries is warranted if you have good service, but isn't expected. 10% of the bill at a restaurant is generally enough.

Tipping in Japan

Tipping in Japan is generally not the done thing. This is great for those of us who are on a really tight budget and who aren't good with our percentages.

Tipping in India

Tipping in India is usually not for good service, it is to make sure things get done.

Tipping in the rest of Asia

Tipping is generally not essential but is appreciated. Again, great for a backpacker and budget traveller.
