redang island backpacking

Redang Island is a wonderful beautiful beach and great for snorkelling and diving. However it possibly has limited cheap accommodation available and may be a little tough to get to.

I actually travelled here with my folks which I am grateful as they paid for the trip. Hence we stayed at a resort and purchased a package from KL. We flew Air Asia to Kuala Terengganu return which included a bus to the ferry terminal and ferry to/from Redang Island.

Getting to Redang Island

From Kuala Terengganu, you need to take a ferry there.  As my package included the ferry, I’m not sure how much it costs.

Accomodation on Redang Island

Laguna Redang Island Resort was the place I stayed at. Standard big resort with a huge pool and a great beach nearby (Pasir Panjang Beach). Why laze by the pool when there’s a great beach there?

A 3 day 2 night package will cost from 548RM twin share. This includes accommodation, ferry transfers, 6 meals and 3 snorkelling trips.

Time of year to travel?

The season at Redang begins mid February and continues to November. Of course the middle of that period (May-Aug) is peak season. Be wary about travelling in February or November as getting there and back is rather rough. The water is pretty choppy at these times of year - many people on my ferry became sea sick. Also, the weather isn't the best and you might get some rain. May through August will be perfect sun each day.

Snorkelling on Redang Island

To keep you occupied, the package includes 3 snorkelling trips, one of those being to the island’s Marine Park. Snorkelling is terrific and you do get to see some great marine life.

I’ve actually never seen so many people use life vests at once! It seems like most Asian visitors can’t swim or can’t swim that well. (not that I can swim much better) – I needed a life vest after about 10 minutes of treading water...

Diving on Redang Island

Redang Island is a great location for diving. I’ve just been told this from the other guests – I don’t actually dive myself.
